KIKO | Make-Up of Milano Review

KIKO, the italian make-up brand, is definitely on my list of guilty pleasures.  Their stores are every beauty girl's dream; a tempting haven of cosmetics laid out with such precision, all individually packaged and not a missing tester in sight! Best of all? It looks super expensive... yet its really affordable.

I recently lost myself in their flagship store in Regent Street and picked up a few goodies (including some bits for my dear Mum for Mothers Day) and I've already planned my next visit.

Firstly, I picked up their full coverage concealer in the shade '01' which is the lightest shade in the range and priced at £7.99.

It comes in a little black pot with a lid, a bit bigger than a £2 coin, and a cute mirror inside. The packaging is suspiciously similar to MAC, but at a fraction of the price, KIKO is definitely a more affordable dupe. The creamy compact concealer is impressive and definitely offers full coverage. I find it goes on best using my fingers and the staying power is superb.

Next up, the 'Ultra Glossy" Lip Pencils in the shades '602', which is a pinky-nude and '607', a bright red.

  • Design - a retractable pencil would have been better.

These are fantastic, creamy and leave my lips feeling moisturised. They smell rather delightful, too! I found these worked just as well for an all over colour, or as a liner and at £1.99, they are cheaper than some of the best highstreet versions.

To match the nude pencil, I picked up a "Pencil Lip Gloss" in the shade '10', the chubbier sister version of the Lip Pencil, but more of a matte finish and a slightly softer application. The colour is so pretty and it stays on well. Refreshingly, I found the lid stayed on brilliantly too. After all, there is nothing worse than finding a half crumbled lip crayon in your make-up bag!

The only drawback to these pencils are that you can't be too far apart from your pencil sharpener! A retractable design would be more 21st Century, but wouldn't detract me from repurchasing.

I couldn't leave without grabbing at least one of their eyeshadows (believe me, it was hard to limit myself to just 1!) but I decided to go for one in their "highly pigmented" range in shade '131' which is a medium-matte brown and can be used (wet or dry) as an eyeshadow AND as an eyebrow powder.

Loving
  • Everything!
This probably has to be my favourite purchase and I will definitely be purchasing more colours from this range. The eyeshadow lasted all day even without a primer and the colour blended easily.

The singular eyeshadows range between £2.90 - £4.90, but they are so highly pigmented, they will last years.
I know they also offer eyeshadows that you can make up as part of a palette, starting at £2.50 (plus the eyeshadows) which is sure to rival MAC where the cheapest palette is about £25.

Now, whatever goes on the face has to come off, so I didn't leave without purchasing the KIKO Cleansing Micellar Water, 200ml, for £6.99.

Loving

Not loving
  • Ever so slightly greasy
  • Didn't totally remove eye make-up

I really like this cleansing water, its refreshing, light and gentle on the skin and has a slight rose water scent to it. I especially liked the spray pump - just press on the pump with a cotton pad to disburse the product - 1 or 2 pumps is enough for the whole face.  It did make my skin feel just a tiny bit greasy and it didn't do a marvelous job at getting stubborn eye make-up off, mainly my mascara.

The KIKO Experience Overall?

In 1 word? Perfection!

The best part about KIKO make-up?  Its super affordable and good quality. You could be forgiven for walking in and doubling the price of each item in your head.

Secondly, you are able to test all of the products before you buy, including skincare, so less chance of disappointment when you get home and realise you don't like a product after all. I am genuinely happy with all of the products I purchased and I've already planned my next visit.

Clinque "Even Better" Foundation Review

Ladies, does the search for the "perfect" foundation ever end?  Well, let me tell you, I've dedicated way too much shopping time to the notion and if I am honest... I think I must secretly enjoy it.

A couple of days ago, I found myself in familiar territory trawling through my 'Foundation Graveyard', an old shoe box of foundations accumulated over many months (maybe, years!) convincing myself that, yet again, I NEED another foundation, an 'even better' one...

That leads me onto my most recent purchase; "Clinque's Even Better Makeup Foundation". This foundation has an SPF 15 and claims to even and correct the skintone. A 30ml bottle retails at £24.00 and given this is on the pricier side and my past tendencies, I decided to purchase a 15ml sample from eBay instead for £9.99, including postage.

Notoriously, I am the lightest shade in any foundation line-up, but as I've been wearing a subtle layer of fake tan recently, I ended up purchasing the shade '03 Ivory'.

Now, fortunately I don't have problematic skin, well not unless you count being a shade lighter than Casper problematic anyway, so I am not entirely sure that I am best equipped to comment on its ability to "even and correct". That said, I do have a fair few freckles and some redness on the area around my nose, so I'll make a judgement based on how well it covers both of those. My skin, generally, seems to be a most inconvenient combination of predominantly dry with an oily t-zone.

Pre Application: Before applying, I rub on a light layer of my Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream and apply the foundation using my Real Techniques Buffing Brush.

Application: The foundation has a creamy texture, is relatively thick but blends easily and provides a medium-full coverage which is buildable. It smells pleasant, doesn't feel or look cakey and gives a pretty flawless finish. After just 1 layer, I actually look quite dewy and my collection of freckles have covered pretty well, but I did find myself reaching for the concealer to conceal the redness. Still, no biggie! Once fully applied, I used a mineral finishing powder on my t-zone.

Post Application: Its now lunchtime and the foundation has been on for about 5 hours. Staying power in general is a little disappointing to be honest and I was expecting a little more.  My forehead is looking slightly patchy and the foundation has worn off on the area around my mouth.  Thank the BLT sandwich for that!

A quick touch up (a very small amount of foundation) and my skin looks flawless again.

In summary...

Had I purchased the full size version of this foundation, I'd have been a little gutted to say the least and I don't think it'd be long before it was banished to the foundation box. I wasn't totally happy with the staying power particularly as I haven't been very active throughout the day! That said, I didn't need very much foundation to cover my entire face and it did give a nice finish, if only for a couple of hours. Another positive is the colour match, I usually find the colour range in the higher end foundation brands to be very dark, but even though I picked a darker shade, it matched my tan pretty well.

Contrary to its name, I disagree this is an "even better" foundation and more a case of "thou doth protest too much".  Sorry, Clinque!

About Me

My name is Ashley Rose, I am 24 years old and guilty of over-indulging in all things fashion and beauty related. For the past 6 years, I've been working as a Secretary/PA in Oxford Street, an unrivaled shopping location that is entirely to blame for my extensive shopping habit. Trust me, it is scary how much you can spend in your 1 hour lunch break!

The blogging world is entirely new to me, but I am excited to share with you the additions to my ever expanding wardrobe, the bargains I've picked up along the way and, for those that are even remotely interested, my thoughts and opinions on my latest purchases.

So, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, grab yourself a cuppa (or a beverage of an alcoholic nature if you prefer!) and check out my blog.

Oh, one more thing, please feel free to comment as I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Thank you :)
